Module Content

This course is designed to help students develop understanding of art, architecture and religion in Ancient Greece through study of certain vases, sculpture and buildings and through exploration of the context in which they were made. We will be following the OCR A2 syllabus. The assignments will be geared towards preparing students for the exam, but if you do not want or need to sit the examination, you can follow the course just for fun and fulfilment, ignoring the information and advice which is not relevant to you.
The prescribed topics for study are free-standing sculpture, architectural sculpture, temple architecture and vase painting. Students will be given guidance on ways to examine the stylistic features of vases and sculpture, including their composition and the portrayal of physical form, drapery, movement and emotion. We will cover the choice of subject matter and techniques used in making vases and sculpture. We will study the buildings and activities at three sanctuaries: Delphi, Olympia and the Acropolis of Athens. Although the principal focus of the course is art, there will be exploration of relevant aspects of society, values, mythology and religion.
Students' tasks will include reading, writing notes, answering questions with short and/or long answers and writing essays. Students will be invited to express critical and personal responses.
