A2 Modules: Autumn 2015-Summer 2017 ~ L3: Latin Verse 
 

The L3 course covers study of both literature and language. We will be following the OCR A2 syllabus. The assignments will be geared towards preparing students for the exam, but if you do not want or need to sit the examination, you can follow the course just for fun and fulfilment, ignoring the information and advice which is not relevant to you. 
For the literature part of the course we study various poems of Catullus. Students on the course will be given guidance on ways to explore this text in Latin: they will be encouraged to develop understanding of the meaning, the literary techniques, and the literary, social and historical context of the poem. They will be invited to express critical and personal responses. 
For the language part of the course students will be set passages from Ovid's elegiacs, for unprepared translation and comprehension. As the comprehension questions will involve scansion, information about this and practice exercises will be given. Advice will be given on compiling a vocabulary list and learning vocabulary.

Paper L3: Latin Verse (100 marks) (Entry code F363)
 

This two-hour paper has two sections:

• Section A: Language - Unprepared Translation and Comprehension (50 marks) Candidates are required to answer one question. Candidates translate approximately 10 lines from an unseen passage of Latin verse and answer comprehension questions on the passage.
• Section B: Prescribed Literature (50 marks) Candidates are required to answer one question. The question will be based on a passage or passages from the prescribed verse text. Candidates will be required to comment on the literary qualities of the passage(s) and to write an essay about the verse text which they have studied.
