This course will not be re-opening after the current examination series. We apologise for any disappointment.

This Eduqas Component 1 course will cover the language of Books IV and V.

It may also be used in preparation for the OCR GCSE Language component.

Please note, for a full Eduqas qualification, you must sit the Component 1 (language) exam, along with Component 2 (Literature and sources (Themes)) and Component 3B (Roman Civilisation). Likewise, if you wish to gain the OCR GCSE in Latin, then you must sit the accompanying OCR GCSE examination papers for a full OCR GCSE in Latin.

You may take this course for your own purposes and/or pleasure without sitting the examination. If you are not sitting the exams you have a maximum time of 40 weeks with your tutor.

The Eduqas Language (Component 1)/OCR GCSE Language course covers the linguistic content of Books IV and V of the Cambridge Latin Course. The Cambridge Latin Course is set firmly in the cultural context of the Roman world in the first century AD. Book IV focuses on imperial Rome, looking at key features of the city itself, and Book V is set in and around the court of the Emperor Domitian.

The main language features of Book IV include:

  • Passive verbs
  • Relative with subjunctive
  • Perfect and pluperfect passive tenses
  • Ablative absolute
  • Deponent verbs
  • Further use of the gerundive
  • Future participles
  • Future and future perfect tenses
  • Future passive tense
  • Present passive infinitive.

The main language features of Book V include:

  • Further analysis of passive and deponent verbs
  • Indirect statement
  • Present subjunctive
  • Further use of the gerundive.

Standard

Your e-tutor will always be an experienced, enthusiastic Latin teacher, who knows the course well and is familiar with ways to help you with any issues which may arise during the course. He or she is unlikely to be involved in this project for the money! Rather your tutor will want to help you get the most out of your study of Latin and the Roman world.

When you enrol for the course, we will send you, by post, amongst other materials, an Independent Learner's Guide, detailing what work to undertake in each session. For examination courses (Eduqas, AS/A Level), sessions are held online. Almost all sessions have a designated assignment to send to your e-tutor. Your e-tutor will mark your work and return it to you, with ideas on how you might improve and, like any tutor, will try to explain an idea or concept to you if you are not certain about it. You do not have to send work if you do not wish to do so, of course, but we strongly recommend that you do, as this will both inform you of how you are progressing, and help your e-tutor to assist you in your learning.

Most of our e-tutors tell us that they would like to be contacted by their students more frequently, rather than less, and no limit is placed on the amount of times you may contact your e-tutor.
All e-tutors have completed a Criminal Records Bureau disclosure and are competent in sending, receiving and marking work electronically. Should you have any concerns about your e-tutor at any stage, you can contact our office at any time.

Component 1 covers the language elements of the UK fourth edition of Books IV and V of the Cambridge Latin Course and students therefore need to purchase the following books:

  • Cambridge Latin Course Book IV, ISBN 0-521-79793-4
  • Cambridge Latin Course Book V, ISBN 0-521-79792-6
  • Cambridge Latin Grammar, ISBN 0-521-38588-1

You will find the books in most major bookshops, or you can order them directly from Amazon.co.uk (not Amazon.com) or The Hellenic Bookservice. If you are a student outside the UK, please be sure to purchase the UK fourth edition of the books. Please ensure you have the books in time for the start of your course.

You will find our free language resources, a vocabulary tester and the defined vocabulary list for download in a variety of formats here (you will find them under 'Section A: Vocabulary' and at the bottom of the Eduqas Language, Component 1 page): https://www.exams.cambridgescp.com/wjec-and-eduqas/eduqas-gcse-9-1-2018-onwards/eduqas-component-1-language

The following files are available to download to assist with your course.

*** Only students enrolled on the course and the course tutors can access downloadable course materials ***

There are 20 study sessions for the language component course, each requiring around 2 hours of study. The advised total study time is therefore in the region of 40 hours.

The Eduqas Certificate and OCR GCSE exams are UK public examinations and students are responsible for entering themselves for the exam via an examination centre in the autumn of the year before the summer of the exam.

School students are advised to approach their school's Exams Officer and ask that their school enters them for the examination.

Mature students may either approach local schools that are Eduqas or OCR GCSE examination centres.

While we cannot take responsibility for entering students for the examination itself, we may be able to assist you by providing information on known examination centres. The WJEC/Educas exam board or OCR exam board may also be able to provide such information.
