We start Book II by meeting a new family. The Roman aristocrat, Salvius, is the head of the household. A successful lawyer and senator in Rome, he's been sent to Britain to help to run the province. His family includes his wife, Rufilla, and many slaves, some of whom are Britons, others foreign. You'll get to know quite a lot about Salvius in this Stage!

The Stories

tres servi Page 5

The time: 82 AD. The place: a Roman country villa in rainy Sussex. The scene: three slaves and their manager - hard work, bad moods and news that the master's on his way... It's a typical day down on the Romano-British farm!

coniuratio Page 7

An assassination attempt by a slave leads to conspiracy theories. It's not just life down the iron mines that's tough, cruel and deadly... say "salve" to Salvius!

Bregans Page 8

Be afraid... very afraid! Salvius is on his way home and wants to inspect his household. One of them, Bregans, has a gift for Salvius - but everything almost goes horribly wrong.

Salvius fundum inspicit Page 12

Salvius takes a tour of his property to see if it's up to scratch. Sick slaves, destroyed buildings and a runaway bull probably won't impress him!
