AS Modules (to Summer 2017) ~ L1: Latin Language
Module Content
This course is designed to develop students' understanding of Latin, reading ability and skills in translation. We will be following the OCR AS syllabus. The assignments will be geared towards preparing students for the exam, but if you do not want or need to sit the examination, you can follow the course just for fun and fulfilment, ignoring the information and advice which is not relevant to you. There will be plenty of practice in unseen translation with passages from many different prose authors alongside systematic learning of vocabulary, grammar and syntax in 26 sessions. In addition, there is a structured reading of texts from Cicero, the named author for one of the translation passages in the examination.

The Examination
Paper L1: Language (100 marks) (Entry code F361)
This paper lasts 1 hour 30 minutes and has two sections:
- Section A: (70 marks) Candidates are required to translate one passage of Latin prose into English.
- Section B: (30 marks) Candidates are required either to translate a short passage of Latin prose into English or to translate five sentences from English into Latin. We will prepare students for the former.
There is a defined vocabulary list of about 1,000 words which must be learnt by candidates for this paper.
